Reading the article and the subsequent letters on the proposed Costa takeover in Dartmouth has stirred me into writing, and quite frankly, I don’t know what all the fuss is about.

What is wrong with the people of Dartmouth? How you can compare Dartmouth to Totnes is totally beyond me – surely we should be welcoming Costa to our beautiful town. It will create jobs for Dartmouth people – if they can be bothered to go for the interview. And with regard to a large chain opening in the town, what about the other ones already here: Pasty Presto, Henri Lloyd, Salt Rock, Joules, Fat Face, M&Co, Moshulu, Marks & Spencer, to name but a few?

Competition is good both for the consumer and businesses and it might just wake up some of the businesses in the town

to up their game. Costa will provide employment and greater footfall, which will benefit other shops – if you can find somewhere to park – and a familiarity for tourists in the town. Don’t knock it.

I say bring it on, Costa! Besides, I can’t wait for JD Wetherspoon to take over the hospital site.
