Smoke from the fire was seen across the town as firefighters rushed to the home which was said to be well alight around 11pm on Friday, December 10. One person was treated by ambulance services at the scene.
A spokesperson for the fire service said: “Following reports of an alarm sounding, a fire engine was mobilised to an address in Dartmouth.
“Upon arrival crews requested further appliances were mobilised, reporting that the bathroom was well alight. Crews donned breathing apparatus and once inside confirmed that the fire had spread to the kitchen.”
The spokesperson said that once the fire was extinguished crews spent time checking the property for fire spread. They remained at the scene to continue checking for ‘hotspots’.
Equipment used by crews throughout the incident included six breathing apparatus; hose reel, mains and safety jets; dry powder extinguishers; a thermal image camera; halligan bar; and various ladders including a triple extension ladder and aerial ladder platform.
Crews attended from Dartmouth, Kingsbridge, Totnes, Torquay, Paignton, Buckfastleigh, Honiton and Bere Alston.
The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.
A community appeal has been launched to help the occupant, whose possessions were destroyed in the blaze. Items including ladies clothing and toiletries can be dropped at the community café in Dartmouth Market on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, between 10am and 2pm.
