Totnes RFC ladies’ team the Bluebirds, who were only formed this season, are going from strength to strength and are now a well-respected team within Devon and Cornwall.

To date the Bluebirds have played nine games, winning seven, losing one and drawing one.

Last Sunday saw a strong Crediton ladies’ team play at Borough Park. Crediton had drawn their last game against Chard Ladies.

The Bluebirds were too strong for the visitors and ran out winners by 20 points to seven.

With a heavy muddy pitch, it was thought that a running game was out of the equation. However, mud doesn’t stop this Bluebirds team and they provided an entertaining game. The Totnes pack were well led by forward and player of the game Donna Dowden, who released quick ball to the three-quarters, where club captain Jen Moss put in some strong, penetrating runs through the Crediton defence. Scorers for the Bluebirds were Laura Shearer (2), Felicity Dunn and Sami Attiwell.

Prior to the game, the Bluebirds were presented with their new rugby shirts, kindly sponsored by Richard Hunt, of Hunts Cider, Stoke Gabriel.

The Hunt’s Cider logo now appears on the shirts worn by the Bluebirds.

Hunt knows a thing or two about rugby, having played for Bristol and Plymouth Albion during his professional career.

These days he can be found down on the farm at Stoke Gabriel running the family cider-making business.

Team captain Jennie Moss said before kick off, the Bluebirds would like to thank Hunt’s Cider for their generous sponsorship. She added: “Our new rugby shirts give us greater presence on the field. We certainly have a team spirit going, with over 25 players attending training, this team can only get stronger. This win is down to hard work by all the players and coaching staff.” The ladies’ game was well refereed by Luke Collins.
