A Devon college is launching a new course to support career progression within the hospitality and events sector.

South Devon College hopes that by launching the Event Management Certificate, it can help address the skills gap in the region.

“Event management is a rapidly expanding sector within Torbay and the wider South Devon area," said Trevor Smee, Programme Coordinator Tourism, Hospitality and Catering at South Devon College.

“There is an increasing demand for hospitality services, weddings, celebrations, conferences, and tourism‑related events. Torbay is a highly suitable region for event‑planning careers due to its strong hospitality industry, numerous hotels, wedding venues, and tourism attractions.”

Nationally, the events industry generated £61.6 billion in 2023, reflecting a strong recovery and resilience after the pandemic. Corporate events, including conferences, exhibitions, trade shows, and product launches, contributed £33.6 billion of this total.

The eight-week course, held at South Devon College, is ideal for students over 19 years old who have an interest in hospitality, front of house, events or team leadership.

“We expect the course will appeal to career changers as well as younger students looking to enter the industry,” said Trevor.

“Anyone who can think on their feet, is organised, a strong communicator, good at problem solving and is financially aware will suit this course. Prior industry experience is not required just enthusiasm, professionalism, and a flair for planning and leading teams.”

At the end of the eight-week course, students will have the opportunity to plan and deliver a real event in the South Devon College Horizons training restaurant.

“The weekly Tuesday sessions will progressively build the skills needed to design, coordinate, and run the final evening event. The practical assessment provides valuable hands‑on experience in a live hospitality environment, mirroring real industry expectations,” he added.
