Police are calling for witnesses to an alleged brutal assault on Totnes Mayor, Cllr Ben Piper, who was punched and kicked in the body and face in the centre of town.

Cllr Piper says he was attacked by two men as he left the Happy Apple store on the High Street at 9.30pm on Sunday March 20.

He was left battered and bruised, suffering a black-eye, a twisted knee and bruises to his body.

The mayor said he approached his assailants, both of whom he knew and who are believed to be in their 20s, about the loud music they were playing in the street.

In response they attacked him leaving him in shock and with injuries so painful he was forced to walk with crutches.

Police say they have not made any arrests at this time but are investigating the alleged assault.

A spokesman said: “Police are investigating an allegation of an assault following an incident on Totnes High Street around 9.30pm on Sunday 20 March.
