Tom Shell, of Alvington Terrace, Kingsbridge, writes:
I read with interest the front-page story in the Kingsbridge Gazette, October 14. I must congratulate Kingsbridge Town Council for highlighting the dangers we – whether we be motorists, motorcyclists or pedestrians – all face from the blight of speeding motorists.
I see that the survey was conducted by the Highways Department of Devon County Council. The results are quite shocking and I’m very pleased that we shall have a flashing warning sign telling drivers to slow down. I just hope that it will have the desired effect, although I am sure a small proportion of drivers will ignore it.
The problem seems to be very bad with motorists travelling up West Alvington Hill – they appear to be testing the speed of their cars going up the hill.
The photograph shows schoolchildren using the pedestrian crossing close to Kingsbridge Community College. It is used to access the good footpath leading to the town and West Alvington. It is also used to access the new playing fields further up the hill.
The dangers posed to our pupils will be increased greatly if the proposed top access to the K5 development comes about. The access will be where the minibus is in your photograph.
Devon Highways initially refused this access on the grounds of safety. For some obtuse, strange reason it changed its mind, despite protests from residents, the headmaster and governors of the school, as well as many other local people.
Outline permission has been granted, with all matters reserved apart from access.
This is madness, as K5 can be accessed lower down the hill to the east of Norden Lane.
I just hope that when full planning permission is applied for, the top access is not allowed. The safety of all, but particularly our schoolchildren, should be paramount.
