I read the article in last week’s Chronicle about the possible introduction of charges for the emptying of the brown waste bins with some concern.
Recycling is a social contract with the community and, like many others, we are keen to do our bit. However, I would draw the line at paying for this service and would resort to other legal ways of disposing of my garden waste. That element of recycling would be lost to the local authority. Some would go to landfill, increasing the volume and cost there, as well as the amount of methane gas generated at the tip as the green waste decomposes.
As well as recycling, the rates are also a form of contract. We pay our dues and expect a level of service in return, but what the local authority cannot do is continue to put up the rates and reduce the service. That way leads to discontent and eventually a breakdown of the system.
As well as our money, it needs our co-operation if things are to work well. It is time for the gardeners of Devon to write to their elected representatives on this issue and advise them that this would not be a wise move.
