Entitled ‘Lost Boys of Britannia Royal Naval College’, the talk explores the famous college’s First World War history.
Dr Jane Harrold will look at how schoolboys went to war aged just 15, when a generation of officer cadets were sent to sea on the outbreak of war in 1914.
The evening talk will use new research into the Royal Naval College’s unique archives to explore this deeply moving and little known aspect of Devon’s naval history.
‘Lost Boys of Britannia Royal Naval College’ has been organised by the Devon Remembers Heritage Project which is managed by the South West Heritage Trust.
It is part of a programme of research, talks, events and exhibitions running across Devon to give local people an opportunity to explore the county’s First World War experience.
Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, the project has received a grant of £267,400 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) with additional support from Devon County Council, Torbay Council, the University of Exeter and the South West Heritage Trust.
The South West Heritage Trust is an independent charity committed to protecting and celebrating Somerset and Devon’s rich heritage.
