Andrew Clarke, of West Alvington, writes: The plan printed within the article of September 12 shows an area of land at West Alvington called Home Field. The article describes this as being part of a 'five-year supply of land for posssible development'. I am pleased that your article goes on to say 'if the plan is approved'. This piece of land has been the subject of considerable debate and animosity within the community, and to date no plans have been submitted. West Alvington Parish Council nominated a working party to consider this (and other) sites for suitability under the new 'consultation' process. It is only after almost a year that the working party was told by the planning officer that although their comments were noted, the developers/ architects were under no obligation to respect them. Perhaps this site should also (along with the extended K5 amendment) have been removed in case it 'slips through the net'. Cllr Brazil appears to be the only person representing the needs of the South Hams. Yes, we need a structured plan to prevent the wholesale development of our area, but this should have been carried out some time ago, and should not have resulted in what appears to be a knee-jerk reaction. I hope that the new working group selected by South Hams Council has regard for what is actually required by way of development and that the provision of two-bedroomed bungalows takes precedence. Perhaps (I know it's wishful thinking) some of the rich developers could donate a piece of their land from the alleged millions they make to provide genuine low-cost local housing? No, you're right, it's far too much to expect.
