Over 25 gig rowing teams from Dorset, Devon, Cornwall and Somerset converged on sunny Swanage for the Supervet Championships 2021.

This was one of the few major gig events to take place since the pandemic began and everybody was excited to be there.

Salcombe mens and ladies Supervet teams were there with their newest gig “Bolt”.

The ladies crew were keen to retain their title having won the event the previous two times.

In the first round there were three heats with Salcombe going off on the third heat and competing against the current World Champions Mounts Bay.

With perfect conditions Salcombe ladies got off to a fantastic start and held the lead with Mounts Bay hot on their heels. Three tight marks later and Salcombe were thrilled to cross the line first on time.

The ladies were through to the cup final and competing against Mounts Bay, Penryn, Swanage, Bridport and Weymouth.

The Salcombe crew nervously lined up at the start in the furthest, outside berth. It was a long, tough first leg to the mark with Salcombe just managing to get ahead of Mounts Bay. They then pulled away and eventually finished the race five boat lengths in front.

Salcombe ladies were crowned the 2021 Supervet Champions and they could not have been more delighted.

Salcombe men fielded a scratch crew of experienced rowers. They had a great start in the first heat and a battle with the Brixham crew for the line. A photo finish saw Salcombe through to the cup final. Competing against the top Supervet Crews in the country Salcombe men were very happy to come a creditable seventh overall.

Ross Thompson coxed both Salcombe crews. The ladies crew was Josie Cuffe, Emma Langmaid, Kathy Norris, Sally Jones, Sharon Jarvis and Kate West.

The men’s crew was Tim Jones, Chris Spencer Chapman, Luke Griffiths, Sam West, Tony Doidge and Geoff Goodier.
