A woman has been rescued from the River Dart in Totnes after she was allegedly pushed in during a mass brawl.

Police were called to Vire Island at 8.10pm on Saturday following reports of eight people fighting and a woman in the water.

Officers said the 46-year-old was pulled to safety by a member of the public at about 8.20pm.

A 51-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting her.

The scene was cordoned off by police overnight.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman said: "We had initial reports of a group of eight males possibly fighting on Vire Island in Totnes.

"There was also a report of a woman in the river.

"A male has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting the female.”

A force spokesman said: "Police have maintained the scene overnight so we can conduct more thorough searches in daylight."

The casualty, from South Devon area, was checked over by paramedics before being taken home. She was not injured.
