Bigbury Golf Club

The junior section held their AGM and annual prize presentation night at the culmination of a great year of golf writes Rosemary Sharps.

Following an 18-hole stableford competition for all juniors with a handicap, and an 11-hole competition for all younger members, all players were joined by their families for a celebratory meal, speeches and prize giving.

The afternoon's 18-hole competition was won by Steven Hurst (7) with 38 points from Ben Sly (13), who came in with 35 points for second place. Adam Keates (6) came third.

The 11-hole competition was won by Caitlin Hamon with 23 points, second place went to Adam Jarvis with 18 points and Jack Darnell was third with 17 points.

After the meal the AGM took place, which included a resume of the year's results and the prize giving.

Junior team manager Dawn Egan was invited to hand out the trophies to Adam Welton, winner of the two-round John Bowman Cup; Adam Welton for the Frank Ferris Cup knockout match play; Isaac Westlake, winner of the Joanne Hurley Trophy; the three Club Championship Cups to Adam Keates, winner of the Scratch Cup, Teenage Cup winner Adam Welton and Junior Cup winner Jessica Leach.

Club president Peter Lucas was then invited to present the prestigious President's Cup to defending title holder and this year's winner Steven Hurst.

Men's captain Harry Kerswell was then invited to present the younger members with their young masters golf certificates.

Certificates were also handed out to Adam Taylor, Luke Chapman, Adam Jarvis and Philip Taylor for best kept clubs, continuously good etiquette, best putting and most improved non-team member.

The evening finished up with a short speech from junior captain Adam Keates, who presented Adam Welton with his captain's sweater as incoming junior captain. Adam Welton then gave a short speech and introduced his new vice-captain Luke Westlake.

Adam Welton started his golf through the young masters golf programme and has worked very hard in the few years since joining and now is reaping the benefit with a single-figure handicap, according to coach Tracy Loveys.

She also reported that both Adam Keates and Adam Welton have been great assets to both the junior section and the club in general and she looked forward to working with Luke as new vice-captain.

Congratulations also go to club president Peter Lucas, who last week returned to the clubhouse, having played a cracking round of golf, with a superb 76 gross, five below his age.

Peter followed the trend set by 89-year-old Roy Bidwell, who recently managed to beat his age on two separate occasions.

Club professional Nigel Blenkarne stated that very few golfers ever beat their age, and he wonders who will be the next Bigbury golfer will be to achieve this special feat.
