He may be just 14 years old, but Ivybridge Community College student Matthew Dixon is preparing to make his Commonwealth Games debut after being picked to compete for England. The dedicated diver earned the right to compete alongside older and more experienced divers by winning the British Senior 10-metre platform title in Sheffield. He is in top form after also taking bronze at the 2014 European Junior Championships in Bergamo, Italy. 'It will be a great learning curve and brilliant experience for me, and I plan to gain as much as I can from it,' said Matthew, who is coached at the Plymouth Life Centre by former international diver Sally Freeman. He added: 'I'm becoming more excited and nervous the closer it gets to the Games.' Matthew will be up against the likes of Tom Daley in the 10-metre platform event and he said he is pleased that he will have such a good team around him to help him through his first major championships, adding: 'I'm going with a good team and a strong team, so that will definitely make it easier for me to adapt. 'I'm looking forward to competing with Tom as he has always helped and supported me, even though he is in London now. 'I'm also grateful to my school, Ivybridge Community College, who are flexible in letting me train with Sally, who's a great coach and very supportive. She doesn't put any pressure on me, she just points me in the right direction and makes sure I stick to that and to keep training.' Freeman said: 'It's difficult to compare Matthew to Tom but, because of his age and what Tom was achieving at 14, it is also difficult not to. 'Matthew has all the same markings that Tom had and still has: brave, cool-headed, works hard and is a natural athlete. He deserves his shot at the Commonwealth Games. It is going to be a great experience for him.' Matthew will be competing in the 10-metre platform preliminaries, which will be televised from 11.43am on Saturday, 2 August. The finals take place on the same day at 7.35pm.
