Laura Tregelles, 17, who plays her golf at Thurlestone golf club has been made Devon junior golf captain for girls under the age of 18.

She started playing golf when she was just seven after being encouraged by her grandparents, both of whom have been captain of Thurlestone Golf Club, where Julian Tregelles is now president.

Grandmother Mary, who has been one of the county selectors, saw promise in her granddaughter and encouraged her to play, driving her to away matches and training sessions.

Laura was soon noticed by the Devon selectors and was invited to the county training and playing in the junior team.

Over the years Laura has won medals and stableford competitions.

Last year she made the cut in the ladies' county championships and was knocked out by the runner-up. Meanwhile, last year in Thurlestone's club championships she came second by one shot to a two-handicapper.

Laura is studying golf at South Devon College in Paignton and working hard at getting her handicap down.

Juggling college and her three jobs, she is playing off 7.1 at the moment and has set a target for the autumn of five or lower.

She intends to stay in the sport in the future.
