MEDALS galore were garnered by superb South Brent Judo Club members when they conquered the county in Kingsbridge recently.

In what was the biggest squad the club have ever fielded, 27 combatants bagged a marvellous haul of 10 golds, nine silvers and eight bronzes at the Devon Closed Team Championships.

The boys' team won all three of their matches against WBB, Ronindo and Kingsley School Judo clubs to win the gold medal and become Devon boys' team champions for the first time.

The boys team was made up of David Grey, Tom Smith, Ewan Baker, Adam Whitfield, Lewis Widdicombe, Tom Ingram, Joe Groves and and John Whitfield. What's more, for the first time the club were able to enter a girls' team. And whatever the boys could do, they nearly matched, earning a sensational silver medal.

Their first match was a close 3-4 defeat to WBB, but the girls bounced back strongly to beat Plymouth JC 4-1.The girls team finished runners-up and they were: Maddy Hawkins, Libby Daymond, Stephanie Smith and Rosanna Haigh. The individual event followed in the afternoon and, once again the South Brent starlets shone.

In the U12 red belt section, the following medalled: Gold – Jake Allen, Ben Close and Henry Higgins-Wright; Silver – Tom Grundy and Jamie Medd; Bronze – James Brown and George Fone-Hawkins. U12 yellow belt and above: Gold – Ewan Baker, David Grey, Maddy Hawkins, Jack Skinner and Lewis Widdicombe; Silver – Jacob Atkins, Libby Daymond and Tom Smith; Bronze – George Hubbard and Molly. U16 red and yellow belts: Gold – Rosanna Haigh and Stephanie Smith; Silver – Lauren and Laura; Bronze – Joe Groves and Will Grundy. U16 orange belt and above: Silver – John Whitfield; Bronze – Tom Ingram and Adam Whitfield.
