The Vets' Turkey Trot was held last Thursday following its cancellation from the week before.

Club chairman John Shepherd won the stableford event with 43 points, with club president Bill Purser second with 41 points. John Mitchell was third with 39 points.

The wooden spoon prize winner was Paul Fermor. Nearest pin prizes were won by Tony Dardis, Terry Tyler, Maurice Mercy and Alan Smith.

The weekend saw the playing of the Men's Turkey Trots. Played over two separate days, this event always attracts big fields and this year was no exception.

Saturday morning brought a heavy frost and several temporary greens did not put off the golfers.

Jason Carwadine won division one with 40 points, closely followed by Alan Lake on 39 points and Alan Smith on 38 points.

Division Two was won by Martyn Lawrence with 40 points. Adrian Jarrett was second on 39 points and Allan Wilby third on 38 points.

Adrian King had the highest score of the day, coming in with 42 points, with Keith Hartup second on 39 points and Brian Oliver third on 37 points.

Sunday brought totally different conditions with no frost and ideal for playing golf, at least those that went out early thought so.

In ideal conditions for golf some magnificent scores were recorded with some major cuts to handicaps resulting. Ed Ashfield won the first division with 41 points. 39 points saw Stewart Ewens come second with Mike Morrish third on 38 points.

It was in the second division where the big scores started to come in. Darren Hodge, playing off 19, came in with 46 points to win the division and was immediately cut to 16.

Billy Bennett, who thought he'd won the division until Darren came in, finished second with 44 points.

Tony Hall and Gary Parker finished third and fourth respectively with 43 points.

However, it was division three where the highest score of the weekend was recorded.

Nick Carter, playing off 23, played out of his skin, finishing with a net score of 59 and 47 points. He was immediately cut three shots to 20. Tom Westrope finished second with 44 points and Andy Pearce third with 44 points.

The later players had the worst of conditions on the day with some heavy rain but a great weekend was had by all.

There were 21 twos recorded over the two days as well. That was the last major competition at the club until after Christmas

Members are also now playing in a 'roll up and roast' on a Sunday.

A nine-hole competition is played in the morning, followed by a sumptuous carvery meal in the clubhouse afterwards. This is proving to be quite successful but we would like more members to play in it.

Some of the players are playing their golf and are then joined by their non golfing partners for the meal.
