SDFL Division Two

Beesands Rovers 4,

Newton United 1

Spring finally arrived at The Cellars on Saturday afternoon, with the ground swathed in sunshine.

The Bees strove to add to their recent league run of thirteen points from fifteen, having scored twelve goals and conceded three.

The Bees started crisply. An early foul on Mikey Dennis saw TJ Lang's free kick caught on the wind and over the bar.

Soon after Ben Bromfield floated in a great ball which was met by brother Tim's text-book header downwards and in off the bar to give Bees the lead.

Newton United responded with their own attack and spectators enjoyed end-to-end action, with the Bees' Morgan pressurising the opposing defence well.

Dennis was making his presence felt as an attacking, right-sided midfielder, presenting an outlet for a number of Bees attacks.

Another free kick conceded by Newton was taken by Lang and headed clear to Greenwood, whose shot was saved.

A Harvey cross was met by Morgan's head and found Greenwood who tucked his shot just inside the post to double the lead.

The Bees continued to attack, but Newton responded with a free kick into the Bees area which, after some ping ponging, was hit high over the bar.

A Newton corner was then half-cleared by Browne, but came back in before it was eventually cleared by Sean Raymont, which saw the conclusion of a comfortable half for the Bees.

The second half began with Morgan, under some pressure, expertly holding off the defender before eventually being tackled but gaining a corner.

Paddy Wellens' corner was the first of several, the end result of which was that Ben Bromfield took a free kick for a foul on Greenwood.

Tim Bromfield headed across goal to Lang, who was brought down for a penalty. Ben Bromfield confidently smashed it home for a 3-0 lead. Bees were now dominating but could not quite extend their lead further.

Newton produced rare attacks before a tired Wellens, having put in his usual unstinting shift, was substituted by DJ Foale.

A Bees corner was cleared, allowing Newton to break away and with unusual defensive disarray, Bees conceded a goal, resulting in 'keeper Carl Hoare making his thoughts well known to his back four.

Newton were given heart by their goal and ventured forward a number of times to no avail.

The Bees, feeling stung, struck back, forcing a corner. After Newton repeatedly failed to clear, a cross by debutant Tucker was met on the half volley by Greenwood to claim his brace and increase the Bees' lead to 4-1.

Gus Hayward replaced Morgan whose tireless front running had posed problems throughout the game for Newton.

The game finished with a surging run from Lang down the line and into the area. He cut back inside and shot, hitting the bar.

The Bees currently sit third in their league, but teams beneath them have games in hand.

The Bees man-of-the-match was R Greenwood.

Beesands next game is away to Broadhempston United at the Headlands, on April 17 with a 6.30pm kick-off. Everyone is welcome to come and support.
