Ashmoor Men's 1st XI. 3
Chichester Men's 1st XI. 2
ASHMOOR men’s 1st XI faced Chichester hoping to put the away result, a 4-0 loss, to bed against a tough side who have been in the top three all season.
Ashmoor were determined to get off to a better start than in the reverse and began brightly. Ben Barnett played a lovely cross-field pass to Lewie Jones whose deflection needed a sharp save from Chris Bristow in the Chichester goal.
However, a penalty corner was the outcome and Barnett produced a superb drag to give Ashmoor an early lead.
At the other end, Chichester had a penalty corner of their own, but Ben Blundy in the Ashmoor goal was equal to it and Ashmoor remained ahead.
Into the second quarter, Ashmoor were unlucky to have another penalty corner awarded against them.
This time player-coach Jack Dinnie blocked the shot, and from the re-award did the same again. However, soon after Ashmoor switched off momentarily and Chichester showed why they are one of the leading scorers in the league, stealing the ball off the Ashmoor defence and creating an overload with a quick counterattack which finished with a back post tap in to level the scores.
Five minutes later, the away side were ahead, Chichester catching Rich Ashworth in possession this time.
Ashmoor lifted themselves from this set back almost immediately, the ball was played into the attacking area at pace, and Cullen Turner who was creating problems up front deflected it to Fletch Naisbett-Jones for a 1-on-1 with goalkeeper Bristow - the keeper making a fine save to deny Ashmoor and keep his side ahead at the halftime break.
Ashmoor regrouped and came out strongly after the interval, a Turner cross almost finding Tom Conway in front of goal. Five minutes later Naisbett-Jones was released down the lefthand side, but his cross-shot went into the side netting with Cathan Wherry poised dangerously on the far post.
Soon after Ashmoor's pressure told - the ever-lively Conway caught the sluggish Chichester defender in possession, strode into the shooting circle and finished with aplomb to draw the teams level at 2-2 with 20 minutes to play.
Ashmoor were on a roll now and threatening forwards a lot. George Galbraith produced a good run along the right baseline but Jones could not get a touch on the cross.
However, Chichester broke soon after and only a strong 1-on-1 save by Blundy kept the scores level.
It was end-to-end stuff, with Sam Wakeham drilling a ball into the advancing Will Maynard in a dangerous position, but the umpire saw an infringement. Chichester were also unlucky when a penalty corner routine hit their own player.
However, Ashmoor eventually broke the deadlock. Maynard played the ball into the shooting area, where Jones bunted it goalwards. Bristow made a fabulous reaction save to keep it out but had to parry it upwards.
The ever-alert Wherry was in the right place at the right time and overhead volleyed it home to make the score 3-2 to Ashmoor.
With now five minutes left, Turner used good skill to win another Ashmoor penalty corner. This time Bristow made a double save and Ashmoor had to see out the final few minutes to take all three points.
It really was an end-to-end game, enjoyed by the large crowd, with Cathan Wherry earning the Pallex Player of the Match for his efforts and his crucial winning goal.
Despite the win, Ashmoor stay in fourth place in the National League, but have made ground on the second & third placed teams.
One of those, Marlow, are Ashmoor's next opponents this Sunday - it promises to be a cracking game.
