Kingsbridge student Harry Goodwin has been called up by the England bowls indoor selectors for the U18 international trial at Rugby, which takes place on 26 April, writes Tony Atkins.

Tipped by many to go all the way, the teenager is already a member of the Devon Liberty Trophy senior side, playing under club-mate and England star Sam Tolchard.

A regular with the Torquay United U25 double rink team, Goodwin was in the England champions line-up as they took another step towards retaining their title with a 49-30 victory over Mid-Glos on a neutral green at Taunton Deane, reaching the semi-finals in the process.

A young man of few words, Goodwin nevertheless expressed his 'delight' at being recognised by the national indoor selectors, as he already is by the Bowls England outdoor selection board, which has invited him to be part of the U25 development squad at Royal Leamington Spa in May.

Goodwin's mom, Angie, was thrilled for the eldest of her four children. 'I'm really pleased for Harry as he's worked so hard on his game to get where he is and 2014 could be an exciting year for him,' she said.

Former Commonwealth Games and World pairs medallist John Evans has seen the youngster's development both at their indoor club at Torquay and outdoors, where Goodwin plays for Kings BC at Torquay seafront.

'Harry's blossoming and is a fixture in all the county and club teams,' said the former England international. 'I know Sam [Tolchard] is very happy with his performance and for someone of 16 years of age he's a real talent. I think, if he stays focused, he can go to the top of his game.'
