There was an unbelievable turn out of athletes and spectators at the Erme Valley Harriers' presentation evening held last Friday at the Hunting Lodge.
The attendees were reminded of a fantastic year for athletics with clips of the London 2012 Olympic Games Super Saturday and anecdotes from Paul Ross and Monica Bristow, who were both national technical officials at the Games.
Paul and Monica then went on to present the awards for track and field, sportshall, cross-country, road running and also volunteers.
Samantha Harris won two awards, one for best U11 girl on the track and field and the other for overall sportshall performances.
Sammy, as she is known, recently competed in the Lee Valley U13 penthalon competition indoors and won the event, setting a new club record points score of 2,233 points, which ranks her number one in the UK at U13 level.
She also set club records in all five disciplines, which was a brilliant achievement.
The other double award winner was Will Battershill, who won the boys' cross-country award following a brilliant season where he became SW champion. Will also won the throws award for his javelin throwing.
Nathan Brown took the awards for middle distance and most popular junior athlete. Sharon Terry was voted the most popular senior for her efforts as a coach, volunteer, team manager and athlete.
There were volunteer awards given to Louise Bristow as best newcomer to volunteering, Mike Lee for services as a cross-country team manager and Ruth Terry as a young official.
In the road awards Alan Ryder won the male award with Alison McEwing taking the female award. Cleo Andrews won the award for most approved.
The outdoor track and field season started the previous weekend in Plymouth with the annual spring warm-up.
In the U11 girls Ruth Green, who won the Sportshall award for best newcomer, ran 11.9s for the 75m and finished second in the long jump with a jump of 2.95m.
Olivia Travers ran an impressive 600m time of 2.16.3 and jumped 2.84m in the long jump.
In the U11 boys event overall sportshall's boys winner Lewis Greenwood won the long jump with a very good jump of 3.20m. He also ran 12.3s for the 75m. Daniel Norton also did well finishing third in the 150m with a time of 25.9s.
In the U13 girls Mia O'Daly, who won the award for most improved girls at Sportshall, continued her good form, winning the discus with a throw of 16.73m and taking third in the long jump with a jump of 3.58m. In the U13 boys age group Sam Tutty had a useful debut over the 75m hurdles, winning his race in a time of 16,5s. Dylan Fox had a good day winning the 600m in 2.01.0 and taking third in the long jump with a 3.44m jump.
Aidan Porter–Holborn won the high jump with a leap of 1.15m
In the older age groups Carie Robertson, who was voted the best club hurdler, showed her continued improvement with a new club record in the 400m hurdles of 68.8s. She also ran the 200m in a good time of 27.5s.
Laura Puleston, who was voted the best sprinter from last season, had two good performances in the 200m (27.3s) and 300m (43.2s), which were excellent in the conditions.
Jake Abraham ran the 100m in a good time of 12.2s, which bodes well for the season.
This weekend the club will have athletes in action at the Ken Trickey open in Exeter and also the Southern Athletics league meeting in Plymouth.
The Harriers will also have representatives competing at the London Marathon.
