Thurlestone Golf Club
Due to the rain and very strong winds on Wednesday it was decided to cancel the ladies’ golf competition writes Liz Line.
Instead the committee organised activities made up of a dingbats quiz round, indoor putting through tunnels for points, putting on the outside putting green, and guessing how many golf balls in a sack, in which 26 pairs competed.
The winners were Shirley Worrall and Jan Brooking, second Joyce Drummond and Heather Spencer, third Sue Curry and Jane Smyth and fourth Gill Markham and Judith Lungmuss. There was also a Christmas hats competition won by Janice Croke.
On Saturday the juniors had a Christmas stableford competition as well as an academy Christmas texas scramble competition.
In the 18-hole Congu group the winner was Finn Whelan (10) with 39 points and a handicap reduction to nine. In second place was Ethan Bellamy (9) 36 on countback from his brother Lucas Bellamy (13), also 36, and in fourth was Noah Mulligan (14) 34.
In the non-Congu group, where nine holes were played, the winner was Louis Tollins with 14, from Lockie Turner-Jones with 13 on countback from Aiden Mulligan, also with 13 points.
A special mention to Paddy Cleary, Ted Hough and Lockie, who were playing in their first competitive nine holes, so well done to them.
We also had 13 juniors playing in the academy Christmas competition, which was a texas scramble over five holes.
Both Jack Wallace and Steve White’s teams scored 27 over the five holes, but Glenn’s team won with a score of 25. They were Vinnie Lowden, Connor Cleary, Alfie Tabiner, Scarlett Boyt and Jacob Brooker. The weather was great and they all enjoyed themselves, especially as they got a Christmas present each!
On Saturday night the club held a Christmas supper and carols evening, which was attended by more than 70 members.
There was also a grand Christmas draw with more than £1,000 worth of prizes, which created much excitement. It was a fitting end to the social calendar for the year and also a good chance for our new members to meet up with everyone and enjoy the hospitality of the club.
On Sunday 26 men played the December medal in lovely conditions. The winner in division one was Rob Came (3) with net 67, from Harry Cattell (9) with 68 and a handicap reduction to eight; third was Alistair Whalley (7) 71.
In division two the winner was Paul Caspar (21) with 71, from Mike Doyle (20) 74 on countback and third Martin Carr (24), also scoring 74.
Lastly we must send Congratulations to Penny Bowden, who had a hole-in-one on the 17th on Monday morning playing in a ladies’ roll up!
