THERE were trophy competitions for the ladies on both Dartmouth Golf Club courses this week, writes Chris Mushens.
On the Championship course, it was the Isabella Trophy - presented by a former lady captain and current member Marilyn Lucas to mark the birth of her first granddaughter.
If you’re going to have one of your best rounds of golf, what better day to do it on than playing in your own trophy competition? On such a day, your drives are perfect, shots into the green are easy and you can see the line for putting without any problem.
Marilyn experience all of that on the front nine and walked to the tenth tee with 28 points already on her card - more than some players managed over eighteen.
Although the back nine started well, points were harder to come by but still acceptable and her overall score of 44 points gave her the Isabella Trophy and a welcome 2.5 handicap cut. Some way behind were Chris Mushens (37pts) and Jan Cousins (34 pts).
The Dartmouth course ladies were playing for the Holden Trophy - donated by former lady captain and previous member Wendy Holden.
Again, there was one player well ahead of the rest of the field. With a staggering 10 points on just two holes, Sharon Jones was also heading to a 44-point finish and another welcome handicap cut, this time 2.6. Sue Warren was second with 33pts and Kate Merriam third with 31. Congratulations to both ladies.
There was a midweek medal for the men and Kevin Eighteen demonstrated the value of no big scores on a hole.
Playing in difficult conditions, and avoiding the 8s suffered by the chasing pack, Kevin steered his way to first place with a nett 76, closely followed by Andy Birss (78), who beat Roy Baldwin on count back.
It was Club Championship weekend for both the ladies and men. Played over two medal rounds and with trophies for both scratch and handicap, you can’t win on day one but you can lose, so all players were doing their best to maintain at least a steady game.
At the end of day one, Beccy Barrett and Karen Oldrieve were leading the way for the ladies, with Dave Nicholls, Rob Haddy, Richie Ogle and Ian Metchette in the mix for the men.
With clear skies and strong sunshine on day two, many players were tiring in the heat of the back nine.
Alan Foot had the round of the day with a nett 68, but it was Richie Ogle who held his nerve and scooped both the scratch and handicap trophies with a total score of 157 (143 nett).
Richie was nine shots clear in scratch but had close challenges from Rob Haddy and Dave Nicholls who were just three shots behind.
The ladies’ scratch trophy, the Gardener Trophy, also had a clear winner - Beccy Barrett’s 171 was a long way ahead of the rest of the field.
The Doble Trophy for handicap was a different matter - in a complete reversal of day one and two scores, Jules Vincent pipped Karen Oldrieve on count back. Well done to all who took part.
