This year saw some additions in the South Hams Snooker League's competitions, with a doubles competition and a singles competition making five separate awards.

Matches are played on a competitive basis, but also maintaining an ethos of respect, friendliness, and fair play. As a result, players have enjoyed their snooker.

This season has seen close competition within the top four teams. Keith Steer and Mike Abbot from the Wrangaton A team had a poor start, but they started to gain momentum as the season progressed.

They suffered nine black ball defeats and without this they could well have been fighting for the winners' spot.

Paul Sherriff (the Sherriff of pottingham) and Paul Hoff from Totnes Conservative Club C have acquitted themselves well to run in third in the league.

Michael Collins and Steve Caithness for Modbury A beat last year's league winners - Chris Reeman and Shaun Peters of Totnes Cons B, by just four points. Roger Sluman and Norman Rooke of Wrangaton B ran out a respectable fifth. Martin Pepperell and Ray James from the Club at Modbury B finished sixth in the league. John Cose and Alan Viney of Totnes B finished their season in seventh place.

John is reported as saying he couldn't hit a hay rick this season and sadly the result shows that. In eighth place Terry Donahoe and Denny Paul of Totnes E could not motivate themselves to be more consistent. They perhaps deserved to finish higher up the league table as they have taken one or two notable scalps along the way and had some black ball losses.

Denny Paul – who is in his 86th year – has won a few frames and suffered some black ball losses. He mutters a little when he loses a frame he knows he should have won, but continues in a sportsman-like manner, great to see. Next season perhaps boys?

The doubles final between The Club at Modbury A and Totnes Conservative Club B went all the way, with Totnes winning the first two frames, Modbury winning the third and fourth and in the final frame, Totnes forged ahead to win through. This match was refereed by Paul Sherriff.

Paul Sherriff won the first frame of the team knockout final against Steve Caithness 62 to 36. Michael Collins had ideas of his own and won the second frame 73 to 33 against Paul Hoff. Michael came out fighting again in the third frame to narrowly beat Paul Sherriff 49 to 36.

The fourth frame was another close affair with Steve Caithness just edging out the winner at 53 to 43. This meant the two Pauls had to travel home to Totnes empty-handed.

Those who turned up to the singles final were in for a real treat of high-class snooker between Michael Collins of The Club at Modbury and Shaun Peters of the Totnes Conservative Club.

The first two frames were shared, Shaun hitting a 53 break in the second. The third frame went to Shaun 66 to 33 and the final frame also went to Shaun 57 to 38. A superb display of high class snooker from these two men.

This year the highest break goes to Shaun Peters of the Totnes Conservative Club with a league score of 40 points.

The break masters was won by Michael Collins of The Club at Modbury. Mike Abbot was in hot pursuit on this one and - would you believe - picked up a runners up trophy. Mike was not quite master of the baize this time out.

The presentation night was held at the Wrangaton snooker facility on March 15.

With the exception of one person who was poorly, everyone turned up. Discussions about the past season took place with all players contributing.

Every player brought a gift to be auctioned and the result of this the charity auction surpassed all expectations. This was a superb evening and all showed their appreciation to Keith Steer, who has worked hard to ensure things run smoothly.

Next season will start in September. Players will be notified of the start date by newsletter.
