Premier Division 2B

Falmouth 2,

KS Cougars 3

KS made the long trip to Falmouth in the pouring rain on Saturday looking to improve on their previous week’s performance.

A fired-up KS took to the pitch in the howling wind and set the pace from pushback.

Bex Darke pushed high at left wing for the opening spell to set an early shutdown on Falmouth’s outletting down their strong right side, backed by Fi Wadey and Rachel Roberts, who closed off any early attacking options for the Cornish side.

Despite the Cougars looking strong, it was Falmouth who scored first against the run of play through a short corner.

Undeterred, KS continued to deliver their game plan of structured attack and soon built play through the midfield to find captain Chloe Harvey inside the Falmouth 25.

Turning her marker Harvey connected with vice-captain Helen Symons inside the D, who managed her defender well to receive in space and slot home and bring the Cougars level.

Coaches Ash Wyeth and Mikey Dennis asked for more of the same from the squad at half time, focusing the players on closing down Falmouth.

From the restart Falmouth struck on the break to sneak ahead again before the Cougars set about dominating the second half.

A constant workrate on the wings from Gemma Samuel, Fern Tucker and Natalie Elliott made superb use of the width and contained the Falmouth attack.

Defending against the occasional Falmouth attack with 11 behind the ball, centre forward Laura Kerly and inside forwards Harvey and Symons made some crucial tackles before the Cougars then broke as a pack, Emily Read looking dangerous as she powered through the centre channel.

With the Cougars shorty routines looking slicker than the rain-drenched supporters, Lou Read came close from a beautifully worked slip routine, but captain Chloe Harvey was on hand to tap in the rebound and bring the teams level again.

With KS building great momentum Tess Baker delivered a superb debut performance in her first match.

KS ‘keeper Claire Jones was on form and as the clock counted down the Cougars looked comfortable and confident.

With Gemma Harvey and Roberts braving the dizzy heights and crossing the half way line, KS set a full press in the Falmouth half.

With two minutes remaining, a great transition starting from the left side released Nat Elliot at right wing.

She played a killer angled ball behind the defence for Laura Kerly to break on to and slide the ball past the advancing ‘keeper to give KS the well-deserved win.

Over match teas woman of the match was a hard choice but was won by Chloe Harvey in a close-run contest.

The Cougars would like to thank the travelling supporters who braved the wind and rain to watch a great team performance and Kingsbridge RFC for hosting a cracking superhero-themed social on the Saturday evening!
