Devon Cricket League 1st XI premier division Cornwood 161-9, Sidmouth 91-0. Sidmouth (21 points) beat Cornwood (two) by 10 wickets in a rain-affected match

It was always going to be a tough ask to get much from this fixture, but Cornwood will still feel aggrieved that a rain delay worked against them. Sidmouth came to Oak Park unbeaten since day one of the league campaign and after winning the toss skipper Will Murray put Cornwood into bat on a damp wicket. Opening pair Jackson Thompson and Ben Warren got off to a good start, getting 50 on the board before Thompson fell to another lbw decision after repetitive appealing from Sidmouth. Warren went on to score 31 before falling to an excellent catch from Babula off Murray's bowling. There followed another Cornwood collapse, with wickets falling regularly until Byron Langley came to the crease. Partnerships with Elliot Staddon and Matt Butterworth helped Cornwood to reach a respectable 165 runs before Langley was caught on the boundary for 35. The threat of rain was around all afternoon, but after tea it got heavier and play was delayed. This resulted in an adjusted target of less than 100 runs that Devon skipper Josh Bess and Devon opener Liam Lewis comfortably chipped away at without losing a wicket. It wasn't that Cornwood's bowling was poor, but with the quality of batsmen at the crease the target just wasn't defendable, said Corns skipper Jason Hall. The Corns finished on just two points, not enough to provide any help in their relegation struggle and with other low rivals Heathcoat winning, the task of avoiding the drop was made more difficult. Cornwood travel to Heathcoat on Saturday knowing nothing but a win will be acceptable. On the plus side, Cornwood defeated Plympton in the Ivor Dewdney Plymouth area T20 final on July 6 then followed up with another win over Bridestowe, the winners of the West A Devon competition. Cornwood will now represent the west of the county in the Devon finals on Sunday, July 27, at Exeter.
