DCL 1st XI
premier division
Sidmouth 301 for 6,
Cornwood 163 all out.
Sidmouth (20 points) beat Cornwood (5 points) by 138 runs
Cornwood 1st XI recorded their second consecutive defeat at the hands of the reigning Devon champions Sidmouth on Saturday, losing by 128 runs.
Batting first Sidmouth got off to a flyer adding 168 for the first wicket before the Cornwood bowlers started to make some penetration.
Sidmouth finished on 301-6 off their 50 overs.
In reply Cornwood were always on the back foot.
With frontline batsmen Jason Hall missing though injury, the Premier new boys wobbled at 75-5 and despite some dogged resistance from a few individuals (particularly Duncan Boase 43 and Mark Horwell 31) the result was inevitable.
The past two matches against probably the top two county sides have realised the Corns only 10 points but captain Craig Harris is refusing to accept that as a negative. He commented: 'We have competed well in certain areas, I was pleased with the bowling of Robin Dart and Ryan Rickard, filling in some of the slower overs' after both Elliot Staddon and Andy Bees were unavailable for the match. 'Unfortunately our run chase lost several wickets along the way, which prevented us from really getting going'.
Cornwood occupy the fourth bottom position in the division with this Saturday's home game against Exeter providing an opportunity for the team to bounce back from their recent disappointments.
The 2nd XI had similar difficulties at home to a strong Sidmouth 2nd XI.
Luke Richardson and Dan Piddock were among those that got started and finished with scores in the twenties but their chase was never sustained and Sidmouth ran out comfortable winners.
Only Cornwood CC 3rd and 4th XI teams were left celebrating their successes of the day.
