SDFL division six Malborough 4, Stoke Fleming 1
UNDER the blustery conditions, Malborough put in a fine workmanlike performance against a tough battling Stoke side. They got off to a dream start, Adam Hurt, cutting in from the right, let fly and the defender pulled off a fine save, Hurt cooly dispatching the resulting penalty. It was end-to-end football, with both sides going close on several occasions. Malborough then increased their lead on the stroke of half-time Garth Morgan's inswinging corner, wind assisted, finding its way into the visitors' net. On the turn around it was Stoke who were asking the early questions, but they came up against a very stern defence. Gareth Head cleared one off the line before Connor Cranfield pulled off a brilliant save to tip the ball around the post. Malborough then began to get in their rhythm, putting together some slick passing of which one such phase saw the move of the match. Harry White went charging down the right flank before releasing Gareth Morgan, who drove the ball across the six-yard box to be met with a bullet of a header from Nick Martin to leave the visiting 'keeper with no chance. Ben Coates put in a terrier-like performance up front, the highlight being when he took the ball delightfully out of the air with his toe before splitting the defence with a pin-point pass to Morgan, who slipped the ball under the advancing 'keeper. With the clock ticking away the visitors got themselves a consolation goal but Malborough were the worthy winners. The man-of-the-match was Nick Martin. The match ball sponsor was chairman John Lapthorn.
