South Brent U16s 3,

Dawlish United U16s 1

South Brent U16s triumph in the Pioneer League Plate final.

Manager Mike Murphy was given the best leaving gift possible by his charges as they came from a goal down to win the final against Dawlish United with three second-half goals.

South Brent, whose team contained seven players who have risen up all the way through the ranks with Murphy, dominated the first half in large parts but went into the break a goal behind against the run of play.

The team refused to be downhearted by their position, and surged to victory in the second half courtesy of a spirited fightback.

The equalising goal came from the boot of Dan Esson, who showed great ambition to embark on a solo run from the heart of defence before slotting the ball home to make the score 1-1.

Striker Luke Rutley would almost certainly have doubled Brent's tally when he was clean through were it not for a clumsy challenge in the penalty area.

This left the referee with no choice but to point to the penalty spot.

The industrious Callum Hill showed no nerves to convert the penalty and give Brent the lead for the first time.

The icing on the cake was provided late on by Guy Allen, who scored the third goal from close range to make certain of a deserved victory.

Murphy, who is stepping down from the team he has coached for nine years, said he was pleased to bow out with some silverware on the same day as his hero, Sir Alex Ferguson, departed.
