OVER the weekend of September 6 and 7, Totnes Bowling Club held the finals of their various club championships which had been running throughout the past season.

Competitions were held for the men’s and ladies' singles champions. There were finals for men’s pairs, mixed pairs, mixed triples and other handicap competitions. Newer bowlers competed for the Novice’s Trophy and two other trophies were competed for in memory of past members.

In particular, a new competition called the Ernie Knight Trophy, in memory of a recent past member who was heavily involved with the upkeep of the bowling green. He will be long remembered for all his voluntary work given to the club. The inaugural winner of the trophy in the new format was Dan Haddigan.

The men’s singles championship was a hard-fought and close affair between Gary Hooper and John Roberts with John coming out on top, finishing only 2 shots ahead of his rival. The ladies’ championship was also a close-run affair between Di Fletcher and Allison Harris with Di Fletcher coming out as the winner of the ladies’ title.

All the trophies were presented on the day of the competitions by either the club president Tudor Joseph or the club captain Ken Law.

Overall, a good day was had by all the competitors, even managing to narrowly miss the bad weather that had been threatening throughout the second day. There were many very close competitions with many results coming down to the last end and or the last bowl of the match.
