Two huge arrays of solar panels have appeared in fields near Avonwick.

The one on the Plymouth road, Totnes to A38 at Woodpecker, is staggering enough, but if you take a right turn just after the Diptford turn, as you climb the hill through the rock cutting you are faced with what I thought was an Olympic stadium.

This in fact turned out to be solar panels covering a hill, and indeed both sides of the lane have fields covered with panels.

Of course we need alternative energy but why this is staggering is that we are in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, known as the South Hams. Is there no one able to stand up for our countryside?

I don't want to be a Nimby but the shocking effect is very real.

Now I read that there is another area near Ermington where beautiful farmland could become shiny panels – and no doubt they need buildings on the site, possibly with lights all night, to service the capture of the sun's energy and its distribution.

I wonder what South Hams Council has to say about this.
