A SERVICE of reflection and remembrance to mark the 100th anniversary of Britain's entry into the first world war is taking place at St Edmund's Church, Kingsbridge. The service will take place at 7pm on Monday, August 4, and is for anyone in Kingsbridge, Dod-brooke and the surrounding area who would like to come to this time of reflection. The wooden altar in the Lady Chapel of the church was given by the people of the parish in remembrance of those who lost their lives during 'The Great War'. Representatives of the Royal British Legion will be attending the service, during which RBL centenary candles will be lit, and the light shared to candles for everyone during the service. Everyone can take part by turning off their lights from 10 to 11pm and leaving on a single light or candle. War was declared against Germany on August 4, 1914 and millions of soldiers and civilians died in the conflict. 'Lights Out' is an opportunity for everyone to be part of the commemoration. The national event is being organised by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, and is supported by South Hams Council.
