John Lapthorn of Woolston, Kingsbridge, writes: It has come to my notice that a proposal is being put before the Salcombe Harbour Board to seek permission to carry out waterskiing in the upper reaches of the Kingsbridge estuary. The estuary has been established as a site of special scientific interest for many years. Waterskiing would be detrimental to all forms of wildlife, both above and below the water. This is one area of the estuary spared from the noise and speed of high-powered boats and jet skis. It would be wonderful to keep it this way. As a member of the group that undertakes the wetlands and estuary birds count throughout the year, I can envisage a major disturbance to what is an important over-wintering area to many hundreds of wading birds, and so I strongly object to the proposal.
