I read with total shock and horror about the proposal to move the war memorial from its present position outside St Mary’s Church in Totnes where it has stood since 1921.

I have two relatives named on the memorial: my father, John D P Lindon, killed in the Second World War; and a great uncle, Sidney J Mortley, killed in the First World War.

What next will the powers that be come up with, turn the Mansion into a Travel Lodge; turn the Leechwells into a sauna; turn the Guildhall into a casino; turn the museum into a drop-in-centre for the homeless; or move the arch to widen the road?

I shall be attending the meeting to register my protest at such an irresponsible proposal.
