Mr A Scull, of Filham, Ivybridge, writes: Ivybridge residents will no doubt recall the consultation process that took place quite some time ago with regards to the Local Development Plan for the east end of the town. A proposal to build 350 houses, along with shops and light industrial units, was put forward. Phase one of this development was to be the construction of some 100 houses in the vicinity of the station. It appears that, with little or no further consultation, this plan has been fundamentally changed, as a planning application has been submitted for 222 houses in the Woolcombe Lane/Godwell Lane area, extending right back to Filham. At the time of the consultation process, many residents expressed concern that the town's infrastructure was inadequate to support a large rise in the population. The areas of most concern were school places, transport links, cycle routes, traffic and noise pollution, leisure facilities and congestion. Nothing has changed since the consultation was completed in this respect. Let us suppose that permission is granted for the construction of these 222 houses and that each unit will house two adults, with two cars, and two children. This would mean in the region of 400 school places being required and 400 extra cars all feeding into the town via St Peters Way, Exeter Street or Woolcombe Lane. These are just two examples of why the town could not cope with 800-plus additional residents. One point of note is that during the consultation process the town council expressed a desire for a new link road between the bottom of St Peters Way and the A38, eliminating the need for some of the increased traffic created by this development to drive through the town. It was with interest then, that I read in the Gazette that there is a proposal to build a replacement recycling centre in Ivybridge, exactly on the route for the favoured link road. There is clearly no funding available for the large infrastructure improvements that would be needed and the fact that our town's schools are already oversubscribed is surely evidence enough to suggest that planning permission should not be granted. Should anyone wish to comment upon this planning application, this can be done online, via the South Hams Council planning website, by letter to the case officer David Kenyon at Follaton House, Totnes, or by letter to the town council. The planning application reference is 27_57/1347/14/F and relates to Godwell Lane, Ivybridge.
