Hilary Stevenson, of Town Close, Dartmouth, writes: I had been looking forward to my trip to Totnes Friday market on the X64 Stagecoach bus from Dartmouth pontoon. Having made sure I was there in good time for the 9.30am departure, I was surprised to see the revised timetable now had the bus scheduled to leave at 9.25am. What difference does five minutes make? I thought. A great deal apparently. I was very dismayed to find upon boarding that because of this earlier departure I could not use my bus pass and would have to pay £1.40 to Townstal, after which my bus pass would be magically valid as the 'witching hour' would have passed. I was extremely upset as I did not have any cash to pay this extra charge – having planned to go to the bank in Totnes – and so my day out was ruined. Unfortunately, the poor bus driver had to bear the brunt of my annoyance, although I did apologise to him and do so here again, as I fully recognise that timetable changes are not anything to do with the bus drivers. My question is this, however. Is it not highly suspicious that Stagecoach has engineered this earlier departure? Could it be an accounting ploy to rake in extra cash? They will get an extra £1.40 from every passenger boarding at Dartmouth pontoon and then another full fare paid by the county council for the bus pass used from Townstal to Totnes. I think they may have shot themselves in the foot with this, however, as there were far fewer passengers boarding at the pontoon than usual. My concern now is the next thing will be the bus will not come down to Dartmouth at all due to the inevitable fall in passengers.
