I was heartened to see the letter last week from our local councillors and would like to thank them for taking a clear position on this very important issue of planning applications. However, I would like to add a further dimension here.

What we need to prevent the drip feed erosion of views of the Dart estuary and flanking views that has taken place in recent years between the town centre and Warfleet are firm planning policies in both the impending neighbourhood plan – when will we see a consultation draft, please? – and also in the new joint local plan, if not too late in the case of the latter.

These policies should, among other matters, set transparent sight lines that are not to be exceeded by new buildings, roof extensions or lift shafts etc. A mini version, if you like, of the London policies relating to views of St Paul’s.

WH Davies many years ago wisely said: “What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare…”

There won’t be much left to stare at along this wonderful vista if a firm position is not taken, backed by strong policies.
