GLORIOUS weather saw a great turnout of vehicles and visitors for this year’s South Hams Vintage Machinery Club Rally.

Held at Sorley Cross each year, the two-day rally is a unique opportunity to see tractors and all manner of old agricultural machinery at work.

Demonstrations in the main ring and the outer fields gave visitors a fascinating glimpse into how farming was done in the past, and even included displays of the original horsepower - ploughing with horse teams.

There were also static displays of old tractors and a huge range of other vehicles and engines, alongside all kinds of entertainment, and refreshments including the all-important bar.

Show secretary Kate Shute said the event had gone ’really well’, with a good turnout and lovely weather. She felt the sunshine had encouraged a bumper turnout of vintage cars, and said everyone that came had enjoyed the demonstrations in the main ring of hay making and ploughing.

The working field was also a great attraction, she said, allowing people to see the old and unusual machinery, including the massive ploughing engines working.

Kate said: ’I think what is different about our rally is that it’s not a static display. We emphasise that it is working, and people that come can actually see these things being used.

’We’re very grateful to the landowners David and Joy Peters, as obviously it’s such a prime spot, next to the road. But we also want to thank all the people that came, especially the ones that travelled a long way.’
