A SOUTH Hams church will open its doors tonight to remember a teenager who died tragically in last year's storms.
Harry Martin was last seen leaving his Membland home, near Newton Ferrers, on January 2 to take photographs of the storms. The 18-year-old failed to return and a search was launched by Devon and Cornwall Police.
The search lasted nine days and utilised the help from Plymouth and Ashburton's Dartmoor Search and Rescue teams, the fire service's specialist search and rescue teams, the coastguard and hundreds of volunteers.
A body was finally found on January 11 by kayakers searching the area when the weather cleared, which was later identified as the missing teenager.
During the search, St Peter's Revelstoke Church in Noss Mayo was used by those praying for Harry to be found.
The Rev Anne Legge is now offering the church to those who want to remember the teenager's life.
'The church will be open from 7pm to 8pm on Friday,' she said. 'The hour will open and close with prayer. In between there will be quiet music and an opportunity to reflect, pray and light candles in memory of Harry.
'We're offering the church as a sacred space in which to remember Harry a year after he went missing.
'There was such an outpouring of love and sympathy at the time that it seems appropriate to offer this opportunity to gather again a year later.
'Harry will always
be remembered in this community, where three generations of his family live.
'Everyone is welcome to come and go during the hour.'
An inquest found that Harry suffered a broken shoulder blade in a suspected heavy fall before entering the water.
The inquest recorded an open verdict and said the cause of death may have been 'immersion'.
