Tim Lewis, of Collacott, South Milton, writes: The bus cuts news, Gazette, January 30, was interesting and alarming. Having spent the past 19 years of full-time employment in local Government in South Yorkshire managing public transport activities, I am fortunate to possibly understand the cuts better than most. Your article last week covered part of the problem, in that it pointed out some of the suffering to the vulnerable and the counter arguments of financial needs. Some other very major further issues exist. What about the local economy and long-term thinking? So far I am still waiting for a promised document from Devon County Council to explain the mathematics of how the probable 'hit list' of services was created. It is not just Sunday services that are at risk. I have taken a look at the 162, which runs, Monday to Saturday, a minimal service between Kingsbridge and Hope via Thurlestone, South Milton and Galmpton. The council is proposing cutting the one afternoon service that runs from Kingsbridge to Hope at 5.30pm and Hope back to Kingsbridge at 6.15pm. This leaves a morning service that gets the rural/seaside dwellers into Kingsbridge for around two hours, getting them back by lunchtime and Kingsbridge people a similar time in the local villages. What about the workers? How do hotel workers, and any other workers without cars, get to their jobs? How does anyone get to a hospital? Even a doctor's visit could become difficult. Of course it could just be incompetence. Then again, it could be the planned collapse of the entire service, because it is obvious that if you make a return journey impossible people won't go out in the first place. Thus, next year the figures will probably show the morning service is no longer viable. And then the whole service disappears, leaving Hope, Galmpton, South Milton and Thulestone without any public transport. Tally Ho! has kindly agreed to let me survey the passengers who use this one afternoon service, and let's see how devastating it will be for all of them. I urge people to look carefully at the whole council listing at new.devon.gov.uk/publictransportbudget/ and make their contribution to the consultation.
