Kingsbridge Estuary Rotary Club raised more than £1,000 in aid of End Polio Now through a cream tea at Thurlestone Parish Hall last month.

The event, held on Sunday, June 18, saw more than 130 people turning up for the cream tea and raffle, with the latter raising £250 for the charity.

John Braithwaite from Kingsbridge Estuary Rotary Club said: “On all accounts an enjoyable time was had by all and we raised over £1,000 for this global Rotary charity, managed by the Rotary Foundation since 1985.

“Since that time we have brought in Bill Gates to support our efforts. We have managed to reduce polio in the world now to such an extent that it only exists in children in Afghanistan, Pakistan and parts of Nigeria, and only five cases have been reported this year, according to our last communiqué in April.

“The Kingsbridge area heartily supported us. The Rotary ladies are to be congratulated on their hard work, so too are members of the Thurlestone Parish Village Voice magazine and Thurlestone Parish Hall who beavered away to make may sure our event ran smoothly - whether it be support with the posters, support with the hall, or, in the case of our punters, support with the consumption of all those scones!

“We also wish to thank the Gazette with their advertising support as well,” Mr Braithwaite added.
