A 36 foot sailing vessel got into difficulties near the Great Mewstone.

An RNLI’s volunteer crew from Plymouth responded to Falmouth Coastguard who requested the launch of the relief Severn class all-weather lifeboat Christopher Pearce.

The sailing vessel was experiencing mechanical issues, leaving it unable to move.

While making their way to the casualty, the volunteer crew were diverted following 999 reports of a swimmer struggling in the tide at Penlee Point.

The RNLI’s Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat Annabel E Jones, which was just launching on exercise, was also called to this incident.

Both lifeboats arrived in the area as the swimmer was leaving the water safely.

The all-weather lifeboat then returned to their original task near the Great Mewstone, established a tow and brought the sailing vessel safely into Mayflower Marina, while the inshore lifeboat returned to exercise.
