Water Safety Advisor Ian Rickard was at Ivybridge Library in the Watermark on Monday giving one of his regular talks about the work of the RNLI, this time to a group of young children.
He is based at Plymouth RNLI but covers a wide area.
Ian describes his work: “I'm a volunteer education presenter, so I go into schools, youth clubs, scouts, guides. When it come to children its mostly about stating safe on the beach.”
Plymouth is the busiest coastal lifeboat station in the country and covers the western part of the South Hams around Wembury with Salcombe and Dart covering the area further up and supplemented by the independent Hope Cove Lifeboat.
Ian said it’s been a very busy year with the Plymouth branch attending around 112 call outs this year already.
Ian has been giving educational talks for six years.
When people want to book a talk they contact the RNLI HQ in Poole who then get in touch with Ian: “I was always told educate the children and they educate the adults so that's what we plan to do is educate the youngsters with regards to safety on the beach,” he added.
