Susan Hannis, of Coldharbour, Bridgetown, Totnes, writes: We all know that the housing situation for many people is dire and getting worse, yet the Government does only things that make it worse. In response to a question about the implications locally if the 'right to buy' housing association properties goes ahead, South Hams councillors rightly expressed their concern at their executive committee on June 18. They are involving the MP and talking to local housing associations about it. Yes, but shouldn't we be getting angry? We all know people whose lives are made miserable by housing insecurity, unaffordable rents and a lack of options. We need really radical solutions to put the balance right. Instead of the millions of pounds paid to private landlords in housing benefit, how much better to reduce rents so people can afford them? How long shall we wait for decent housing for all – what I would say is a basic human right?
