Populism has come about because people got fed up with being patronised and dictated to by a privileged mainly metropolitan elite.

These people actually believe their opinions should carry more weight than ordinary citizens.

Unfortunately a few Tory MP’s who disagree with the referendum result have reverted to type and once again decided they know better. Even our own MP seems to be considering this option.

Parliament voted overwhelmingly to uphold the referendum result. The Conservatives election manifesto clearly stated Brexit would entail leaving the EU, the Single currency and the Customs Union. Every Tory MP stood on that platform. In fact both main parties had the same promise and got over 80% of the vote. It seems these arch Tory remainers are prepared to undermine their party, their party leader and our negotiators on a last ditch attempt to keep us in the EU.

This is not a choice for a hard or soft Brexit. What this group want is to keep us in the present Customs Union, which means we will be unable to negotiate our own trade deals and stay shackled to EU laws and regulations.

Sajid Javid, the new Home Secretary, and Caroline Flint have done the honourable thing and although they voted remain are now backing their leader completely.

It is time for these few rebel Tory MPs to stop throwing their toys out of the pram and start contributing to a successful deal.
