All bus services will return to Plymouth’s Royal Parade after a public uproar over some services being shunted to Mayflower Street.

Hundreds of people signed petitions calling for return of the 8, 9 27 and 28 bus to Royal Parade as they said Mayflower Street was too far to walk for those less able to destinations like the Theatre Royal and disrupted the daily routine.

Plymouth City Council had moved eight services to allow for the £7.5 million revamp of its main bus interchange and didn’t return them once the work was complete in March . However, it later U-turned on the decision after complaints.

The services that will return are

8 and 9 (Efford and Laira)

27 and 28 (Lower Compton, Eggbuckland, Mainstone)

30 and 31 (Peverell and Hartley Vale)

35 and 35A (Ham and Beacon Park)

The council said changes should also make it easier for people who struggle to walk up the slight gradient of Armada Way to catch the bus.

To allow for more services at Royal Parade, things will look a little different.

Almost half the services will be moved to a new stop – but all on the north side A9 to A24.

“It may take a little getting used to, but the ever-helpful Plymotion will be patrolling Royal Parade to help guide people to their new stops,” said the council.

“In response to feedback from passengers the Ivybridge services will now all leave from one stop, the A9, the 21/As will now depart from one stop rather than across two stops and park and ride services will all leave from the same stop – the 61 and 200.”

Cllr John Stephens, cabinet member for strategic planning and transport, said: “We’ve taken on board a lot of comments, so please come on board the buses! We are working to improve services all the time and are listening to what bus users want.”

There will be no changes to services stopping on the south side of Royal Parade, stops A1 to A7.
