Below is a edited copy of an email sent to PC Frankie Vaughan at Dartmouth.

My wife and I decided to abandon our property in ‘rough and tumble’ Torquay, partly due to the council’s and police’s complete refusal to act when two neighbours entered on to our property and chopped down five to seven protected trees with apparent complete impunity, wishing to improve their views of the coastline etc.

Also, of course, in Torquay Gordon Oliver`s Tory council welcomes, for example, the young farmers who in my experience simply beat up the town.

Having abandoned our home in Torquay, what do we find in ‘rough and tumble’ Dartmouth under you?

l Cyclists routinely cycling on the pavement.

l Motorists every day ignoring the one-way system in front of Sails, our home.

l Racing cyclists riding on the pavement with seeming impunity, scattering pedestrians as they ride at about 20-30mph.

l Cars and motorcycles that ignore legal sound restrictions.

l Cars ignoring the speed limit entering into the corner, on which our home stands, above the speed limit, taking the ‘racing line’ frequently in a Monaco Grand Prix style.

What do you and your police colleagues do in my experience as you drive around town? Seemingly absolutely nothing!

Meanwhile, I live in the hope that our town council, the mayor and the chamber of trade, for example, will bring their influence to bear on the police to stop ‘rough and tumble’ Dartmouth degenerating even further.

Clearly, against the above background, I will be mounting a campaign to ensure ‘rough and tumble’ Dartmouth never becomes Royal Dartmouth.
