THE Oxfam Bookshop in Kingsbridge celebrated the 100th birthday of beloved children’s author Roald Dahl this September with a day-long party.
Activities included a hunt for five golden tickets in a lucky dip full of prizes, translating names into Gobblefunk, BFG colouring-in, and inventing dreams in Dream Jars.
Children and adults enjoyed the wacky Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory with ‘scrumdiddlyumptious’ treats including marvellous marshmallow brownies, cake lollipops, caramel surprises, and escape-from-the-zoo mud cakes.
Staff were dressed as characters from James and the Giant Peach: Mrs Ladybird and the Glowworm - who came complete with light-up tail and luminous accessories – with the window display showcasing a 3D giant peach held up by seagulls, crossing the ocean to New York City.
For those who couldn’t visit on the day, the window display can still be seen and a Roald Dahl quiz can be entered up to the end of the month when there will be a prize draw to win a colour illustrated Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Manager Vicky Armstrong - aka Mrs Ladybird - said: ‘We all had a fantastic time, especially during the hunt for the Five Golden Tickets – it was hugely exciting when one was unwrapped, and one lucky family pulled out two!
‘We raised £60 from the day which will all go towards Oxfam’s work overseas. Many thanks to everyone who came and made it such a success.’
