You recently had a report about the latest Totnes Make Votes Matter Group meeting.

It was drawn to the meeting’s attention that a number of people had written to our MP, Sarah Wollaston, asking her about her support for a change in the voting system to proportional representation.

She had answered, as indeed she has answered letters from me as well, by saying that this subject was settled at the 2011 referendum... which was about a change from our present firstpast-the-post system to an alternative vote.

I feel it is important for your readers to know that AV is very similar to FPTP; AV is distinctly not a PR voting system.

I have asked Dr Wollaston not to answer questions about a change to PR with reference to that referendum as, at best, it is very misleading.

The British public have never had a say about a shift to a PR system, even though opinion polls consistently return the result that around 70 per cent of those polled, when asked the question “Do you want votes to be reflected in Parliament with a proportional number of seats?” say “Yes”.

During National Democracy Week, July 2-6, we have a meeting with Dr Wollaston to discuss our very undemocratic voting system and the urgent need to change it.

In fact about 80 per cent of developed democracies use some form of PR. We need to catch up.
