An iguana went missing from his home in Kingsbridge on Thursday, but is now back where he should be.

The iguana, called Lenny, is owned by Phil McCarthy of Scholar’s Walk, who noticed he was missing on Thursday and turned to Facebook to help find his exotic pet.

His post was shared 117 times and Lenny was found in the top of a tree, two gardens away, and returned to his rightful place.

Phil said: “Lenny is my son’s iguana, who has moved to London with a new job, so he has left him with me. We brought him home on Tuesday evening, and while I dropped my son at the airport he had got out of his enclosure and travelled across two gardens and climbed a tree.

“We just noticed the leaves on the tree moving, I was convinced we would never find him, but we managed to get him down and he’s back in his enclosure.

“I have worked out his escape route so he is secure now.”

Lenny has a large outside enclosure with heat lamps and an outside area where he can bask in the sun.

An iguana is an unusual pet, but can be a rewarding animal to be part of the family, if you know how to care for them properly.

They can reach seven-feet in length, including their tails, and can live for around 15 or 20 years.

Lenny is fed every two days and is a vegetarian, like all iguanas, being fed on fresh greens and vegetables, including collard, mustard and dandelion greens, turnip greens, kale, and romaine lettuce, plus vegetables such as shredded carrots, peas, beans, bell peppers, and squash.
