Residents have been knitting and crocheting for four months to create over 1,000 poppies for a remembrance display.

In Blackawton to commemorate the centenary of the ending of the First World War, a small group of 42 committed individuals took on the task of knitting and crocheting poppies. Family and friends from as far as Cornwall, Bath and Essex also helped complete the challenge.

In under four months they produced 1,019 poppies in a variety of shapes and sizes. After which, nine people spent a week sewing the poppies onto 31 lengths of tape and four people spent three days assembling the poppy creation.

The finished piece was put on the gate of St Michael’s Church in Blackawton to commemorate the 100 years anniversary.

Some volunteers remembered long forgotten knitting and crochet skills and others learnt for the first time. All who volunteered enjoyed giving time to the project.

A spokesman from the parish said everyone who has walked past the display has commented on the impact it has made and the school children are busy guessing how many poppies there are.
